Sun, 12th Sep 2010 | TAEKWONDO DEMONSTRATION WITHERIDGE
DS TAEKWONDO OPENS NEW MARTIAL ARTS CLUB IN WITHERIDGE INAUGURATED in the south of Korea, Tae Kwon Do has become one of the most well known martial arts in the world. Developed from Taek Kyon and a Japanese form of karate (Shotokan) by the legendary founder Grand Master Choi Hong Hi a Major General in the Korean army during the time after WW2. Devon and Somerset (DS) Tae Kwon Do brings the ultimate art of kicking and punching to you! Starting the 20th September every Monday and Friday night, Witheridge Parish Hall will become a Korean ‘Dojang’ for the students of 4th Dan Black Belt International Instructor Wayne Sibthorpe. Wayne who has over 25 years of experience in martial arts not only enjoys his life as an instructor and as a student in Tae Kwon Do; he also trains military personnel in self defence and unarmed combat. But don’t be mistaken into thinking the classes are run on a military based regime because Tae Kwon Do is for anyone who enjoys a bit of fun and fitness or who is interested in self defence or even if you just like martial arts. Wayne has competed for the Army, Combined Sevices and represented England in 5 world championships achieving the accolade of World Bronze medallist twice, once in 2005 and again in 2007. He will be competing in his 6th World Championships weekend 11th/12th of September 2010. On Friday 3rd September the students and instructor of DS Tae Kwon Do had the chance to perform their skills in front of an audience. The demonstration was held at Witheridge Parish Hall and was very successful. The demonstration kicked off with a warm-up mixed with some fun and games. Next the tigers performed a synchronised pattern and they were followed by more synchronised patterns each performed by a higher grade. After that came ‘pad work’ where the students were put in different lines according to the colour of their belt. A series of different types of sparring then followed. First set sparring where students performed certain attacks and defences in different steps against each other. Then free sparring was performed by the higher grades and the demonstration finished with destruction which demonstrates the power of Taekwondo techniques. During this the black belts used various hand and foot techniques to break wooden boards held by other students this culminated in Wayne performing a flying side kick over two students to break a board in midair. The captive audience enjoyed every second and it all went very well. The main class (age 9 to adult) will run on Mondays 8 p.m. and Fridays 7p.m. In addition to this on Fridays there will be a class run specifically for 4 to 8 year olds on Fridays at 6 p.m. First two lessons are free. If you have any queries please call Wayne on 07827 442524 or for more information please visit www.dstaekwondo.com. By Connor Sibthorpe (aged 12)
